Earthly Poem for a Forgotten Place
This exhibition invites the viewer to journey through La Vorágine (The Vortex) from a dual ecological perspective: the morichales—the palm groves emblematic of the Eastern Plains of Colombia—and, on the other side, the lush and mysterious Amazon rainforest. This convergence offers a layered understanding of the intricate relationship between humans and nature in one of the most impenetrable regions on Earth.

Landscapes of memory and resilience, where nature bears witness to history's wounds.
Through a carefully curated selection of paintings, we are immersed in landscapes that have witnessed the contradictions and violence tied to Colombia’s rubber exploitation era. These territories—long neglected by centralized state power—were indirectly documented in José Eustasio Rivera’s novel. Although not written with scientific taxonomy in mind, La Vorágine carries the essence of a naturalist expedition: it vividly conveys the atmosphere, textures, and sensations of these remote places—territories that breathe resistance and possess the strength to endure despite the catastrophic impact of human actions.

Each painting invites the viewer to contemplate both the richness and fragility of these ecosystems. Between the forest and the morichales, this body of work becomes a reflective exercise, urging us to reconsider our relationship with nature and the traces we leave behind
Reading La Vorágine is like diving into a green ocean. It means inhaling the scent of lush, generous, and intimidating flora. Rivera’s prose creates a visceral illusion of teleportation: the relief of seeing a morichal on the horizon, the imagined taste of food after days of exhaustion, the thrill of entering the forest—its secrets unfolding, asking to be deciphered, respected, and ultimately embraced. It is a merging with nature, the blurring of the human figure, and perhaps, the realization that we exist in unison with the Earth. To surrender to it.

“This is the interpretation I have drawn from the novel. It inspired this series of paintings—an exercise in memory and belonging. A visual search for the imagery deeply imprinted in the collective memory of Colombians. Regardless of where we are born, the landscapes and natural elements that surround us mark us permanently”
